Comment: After graduating from the high, I attended University of Michigan and graduated with a B.A. in 1967. After attending the summer riots with a job at a downtown bank, I attended the University of Missouri and graduated with a Master's Degree in 1968. Taught 2nd grade in Clio, Michigan, middle school in Banning, California. Moved to San Diego to be the City's Contract compliance officer on any relationship the City had that cost over $1. Moved to San Francisco to work at Bank of California, at the time the only bank in the U.S.that was in multiple state based on gold rush agreements...now doesn't that sound like the good old days? Was the 3rd female ever appointed Vice President in the 150 year history of the bank, but now that too sounds like the old days. I also put on seminars for the National Banker's Associations in those states. Sarah was born and I continued several more years at the bank. Was then a single parent for 7 years and needed a job with more child time so I took a job at Livermore National Laboratory where I did employee relations for 3500 engineers and was also in charge of the stress management program. The best thing was I also found Robert, a research scientist. I got a graduate certificate in the Psychology of the Aging and developed a video program on aging and careers that was used in the U.S. and abroad by the IEEE (professional society of electronics and electrical engineers). On the tape you cannot even tell I am standing on the leg that just had melonoma surgery. Decided to reduce the stress and left the Lab to consult, spend more time with Sarah and go with Robert when he gave international papers. We enjoyed doing projects together and traveling till Robert's M.S. got too bad. Then we have had to stick pretty close to home so we are now in our own little ranchette of about an acre at the foot of Mt. Diablo. I had another cancer surgery.  Last year I gave up my flock of Jacob sheep but still have the chickens and 3 Haflinger horses.  I have 4 vehicles for my horses and drive my pair of mares in parades where my group has even won awards. This New Year's Day we will be in the 2010 Tournament of Roses Parade.  The group of Haflingers that I am Marshal of comes from all over the West Coast.  Please watch and see my repainted 1880 2 seat surrey.  One of the outwalkers will be my daughter Sarah. If you are in the L.A. area come to Equestfest on Dec. 29 and see us do a little program in the horse show. Come back to the stable and say hello and meet Meg and Larissa, my  wonderful pair.

2011:  Since my last entry Robert died a pretty awful and prolonged death from the M.S.  in 2010.  Am still trying to bring order to his office...research scientists tend to have their "unique" ways of filing and I can only work on it for so long ;-).

Have been keeping up with the horses and had a new Haflinger born here this Spring..have high hopes for her as she is the product of 2 silver rated parents. She joins a rescue alpaca as new additions. The alpaca has the name James Brown cause whenever I look at him "I feel good"..never had anyone see him that was not taken by his cuteness.  Took my daughter to Russia this Sept. and cruised from Moscow to St. Petersburgh, stopping at all the interesting cities , islands and palaces.  I still have Africa and China on my bucket list.

After Robert's passing, got real involved with my Methodist church,  teaching classes on unique topics, supporting the senior programs and just generally  being involved.   Also took many classes that I had always wanted to take...belly dancing, line dancing, sketching, medieval kings of England....found out I was well past the first 2..though in my heart i can still see myself covered in coins, belly dancing..illusions die slowly, despite proof!  I am not an artist but the sketching really improved my eye and appreciation for all the fabulous art that tours this area at the S.F. museums.  The 50th reunion sounds tempting as I have never gone..but I wonder if that gives me time for all the plastic surgery I would need to face all of you ;-)

Was re-elected in Nov. 2011 for another 4 years on the Madison Heights City Council--I'm in my 18th year there and am the only woman. My husband Jack and I worked on setting up our city's first historical museum, the Madison Heights Heritage Rooms.  Luckily I saved a lot of my parent's favorite things from their Grosse Pointe home and now have them on display in the rooms. My daughter Kristen and her family live in the house I grew up in on Lakepointe so that's 5 generations of our family in GP!

Looking forward to our 50th!

First of all, I have to say that I am glad we elected Paul as class president for life. He and the rest of the core group have done a great job over the years of keeping tabs on us and organizing reunions. I didn’t attend any until the 40th, but it was great and so was last year’s. If you can make it to the 50th, you really shouldn’t miss it.

And now, for a brief history of my life since high school: Bette Casey and I both graduated from Michigan State. We were married in September of 1967 and divorced in October of 1977. In the intervening years, we moved to California and struggled mightily. For most of that time, I was an independent sales rep in the gift and decorative accessories business. Bette (now Elise) and her new husband (thirty years!) and my new wife and I (thirty years!) all still live in California. Bette and I had two sons who live nearby. The oldest, Jeff has a sweet wife and two beautiful daughters. They usually come for dinner on Sundays. Our second son, Steve often comes too. My wife, Susan and I have three more children, the youngest of whom – our only daughter – is now 20 and attending college locally. She wants to be a dental hygienist. Bette and I are still on good terms and we see each other a couple of times a year.

I have been in sales all my life. I started out selling typewriters (remember them?) for IBM. For the last thirty years, I have been mostly in the contract furniture business, working for dealers and small manufacturers. It has been pretty good to me. Although as I approach retirement age, I can see that working for a real company with retirement benefits would have been nice. I don’t think I will be able to retire until I’m 100! In fact, my brother-in-law and I are starting a new business: commercial landscape maintenance. I enjoy my life though; I love being in front of customers, trying to help them make good decisions. I’m afraid that if I retired, I would go to seed pretty quickly.

My wife Susan is a bit of an athlete and she keeps me on my toes. Last August we hiked from the valley floor of Yosemite (Happy Isles) up to the top of Half Dome (14 miles up and back via the Mist Trail past Vernal Falls with a vertical elevation change of 4,800 ft.). It was quite a trek – not for the feint of heart. I love golf and get out as often as I can. When I was in the Detroit area last fall, I played Cherry Creek; what a nice course.

If you haven’t already, I hope you will write a brief personal history yourself. I know I speak for your classmates when I say, we all enjoy reading them.

Dear Classmates of 1963.

I have written a book entitled, ASSORTED NUTS, A FAMILY ALBUM which was released to major bookstores and online websites (i.e.: Amazon.com) as of November 17, 2009. I hope you will read it.

It is a humorous memoir which includes my experiences with the quintessential dysfunctional childhood, three husbands, breast cancer and alcoholism. (Yes, I did say humorous). It also includes several chapters about my life at Brownell Junior High School and good ole GPHS. Deane Malchie Preston, Janey Walker Meade, Karen Amluxen Harlan, and Jan Wenzel Rehmann all make cameo appearances.

For the thirteen of you that might actually remember me, my name is Sandy Chapel Bax. If you buy my book, THANK YOU. If you like my book, please make a note on facebook.com so I can show the bookstores how popular I am when the release date arrives.

You can purchase a pre-released copy now by logging onto: http://www.assortednuts-sandybax.com Wishing you tears of laughter. Sandy
